Pakistan’s economic indicators are showing encouraging signs of recovery in 2025, with inflation falling to single digits for the first time in three years and foreign exchange reserves reaching their highest level since 2022.
Inflation Falls
Consumer price inflation dropped to 8.2% in the latest data, down from a peak of 38% in 2023. This has provided significant relief to ordinary Pakistanis who faced severe cost-of-living pressures.
Foreign Reserves Strengthen
The State Bank of Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves have increased to USD 10.5 billion, providing over two months of import cover — an improvement from the critically low levels seen in 2023.
IMF Programme on Track
Pakistan’s Extended Fund Facility programme with the IMF remains on track, with the most recent review completed successfully. This has helped restore investor confidence.
Challenges Remain
Despite these positive developments, Pakistan still faces significant challenges including high public debt, energy sector circular debt and the need for structural reforms to achieve sustained growth.
Economists remain cautiously optimistic but stress that reforms must continue to consolidate these gains.
