Cookie Policy

In brief

The Image Metadata Viewer tool does not need cookies to work, and it does not set any cookie in order to read your images. Cookies that appear on this site come from the website platform and from whichever third-party services are enabled.

You can block or delete cookies through your browser at any time. Doing so will not stop the metadata tool from working.

1. What are cookies?

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store on your device. When you return to the site, the browser sends that file back, which lets the site recognise the visit and remember information between page loads.

Similar technologies do comparable things by other means. Local storage and session storage keep data in the browser without sending it with every request; pixels and tracking scripts record that a page was loaded. Where this policy says “cookies”, it covers these similar technologies too.

Cookies are usually described in two ways:

  • By who sets them. First-party cookies are set by the website you are visiting. Third-party cookies are set by another company whose service the site loads, such as an analytics or advertising provider.
  • By how long they last. Session cookies are deleted when you close your browser. Persistent cookies remain until they expire or you delete them.

2. How we may use cookies

This website may use cookies or similar technologies depending on the services and features enabled on the website. Rather than list cookies that may not be present, this policy describes the categories that could apply and what each is for.

Two things are true regardless of what is enabled:

  • The metadata tool does not require cookies. It reads your image in your browser and needs no stored identifier to do so. Blocking cookies entirely does not affect it.
  • No cookie receives your images or their metadata. That information never leaves your browser, so it cannot be placed in a cookie or sent to any third-party service. This is set out in the Privacy Policy.
Cookie categories at a glance
CategoryPurposeCan you refuse it?
Essential Delivering the site securely and keeping basic functions working. Not usually — the site may not work properly without them.
Analytics Counting visits and understanding which pages are used. Yes.
Advertising Serving ads, limiting repetition and measuring performance. Yes.
Functional Remembering preferences and choices you have made. Yes, though some conveniences will stop working.

3. Essential cookies

Essential cookies are needed for the website to be delivered and to operate safely. They are typically set by the website platform itself or by a security or caching layer, and they may be used to balance server load, protect against automated abuse, keep a form submission valid, or maintain a session for anyone signed in to administer the site.

Cookies of this kind are not used to track you across other websites and are not used for advertising. Because they support core functions, they are normally exempt from consent requirements — but they can still be blocked in your browser, at the cost of parts of the site possibly not working as intended.

4. Analytics cookies

Analytics cookies help a site owner understand how the website is used in aggregate: how many people visit, which pages they open, roughly where they come from and which links they follow. The purpose is to improve the site, not to identify individuals.

Where an analytics service is enabled on this website, it may set cookies or use similar technologies for that purpose, and it processes the resulting data under its own privacy policy.

Some analytics services work without cookies at all, reporting only aggregate page views. Where cookies are used, they are non-essential: you may refuse them, and the website continues to work normally if you do.

Analytics services never receive your image files or the metadata read from them.

5. Advertising cookies

Where advertising is displayed, it is delivered by a third-party network rather than by us. Advertising cookies are commonly used to serve ads, avoid showing the same ad repeatedly, measure how ads perform, and in some cases to personalise ads based on browsing activity across different websites.

Any advertising network operating on this site handles the information it collects under its own privacy policy, which we do not control. Advertising cookies are non-essential and may be refused.

You can limit personalised advertising in several ways: through your browser settings, through the ad network’s own controls, or through industry opt-out pages such as youradchoices.com and youronlinechoices.com, which cover participating networks.

Opting out of personalised advertising does not remove ads. It means the ads you see are less closely matched to your browsing. No advertising partner receives image files or image metadata from the tool.

6. Functional cookies

Functional cookies remember choices you have made so that the site behaves the way you left it. Typical uses include storing a language or region preference, remembering that a notice has been dismissed, or keeping a display setting between visits.

These are conveniences rather than requirements. If you refuse or delete them, the site continues to work but forgets your preferences and may show a dismissed notice again. Any preference recorded this way stays in your browser and is not linked to your identity.

7. Third-party cookies

Some cookies on this site may be set by companies other than us, because their services are loaded as part of a page. Depending on what is enabled, that can include hosting and security providers, content delivery networks, form handling services, embedded content, and any analytics or advertising provider named above.

We do not control third-party cookies. The company that sets a cookie decides what it contains, how long it lasts and what it is used for, under its own privacy policy. If you want to know exactly what a particular provider stores, its own policy is the authoritative source.

What we can state clearly is that no third party receives your image files or the metadata read from them through this website, because that data is processed in your browser and never transmitted.

8. Cookie management

You have two ways to control cookies on this site: the site’s own consent controls, where they are present, and your browser settings, which always work.

Where a consent banner or a cookie settings control is shown on this website, you can accept or decline non-essential cookies there, and return to it later to change your choice. Where no such control appears, the browser settings described in section 9 remain available and give you full control either way.

Withdrawing consent applies from the moment you change the setting. It does not delete cookies already stored on your device, so you may also want to clear existing cookies through your browser.

Refusing non-essential cookies does not restrict your use of the Image Metadata Viewer. The tool has no cookie requirement of any kind.

9. Browser cookie controls

Every major browser lets you see which cookies are stored, delete them, block them from particular sites, or block third-party cookies altogether. These controls apply to every website you visit and work regardless of what any individual site offers.

You will usually find them under settings named along these lines:

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies, and Delete browsing data.
  • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data, and Enhanced Tracking Protection.
  • Safari: Settings or Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data and Prevent cross-site tracking.
  • Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions.
  • Mobile browsers: the same options appear under Settings → Privacy, with wording that varies by version.

Private or incognito windows discard cookies when the session ends, which is a quick way to browse without leaving them behind. Bear in mind that blocking all cookies affects every site you use, and many websites depend on them for signing in and other core features.

10. Changes to this Cookie Policy

This policy may be updated when the services used by the website change — for example if analytics or advertising is added or removed — or when legal requirements change. The “last updated” date at the top of the page shows when the current version took effect.

Where a change means new categories of cookies are used, this page will be updated and, where consent is required, you will be asked for it before those cookies are set.

11. Contact

Questions about this Cookie Policy can be sent through the contact page. Choosing Privacy question as the subject helps it reach the right place.
