Help and common questions

Most messages fall into one of these four areas, so it is worth checking here first.

The tool shows no metadata for my image
This is the most common report, and it is usually the file rather than the tool. Social networks, messaging apps and web exports strip metadata as a matter of routine, and screenshots or images made in design software never had EXIF data to begin with. Try the original file taken straight from the camera or phone. If an untouched camera file still shows nothing, that is worth reporting.
Only file size and dimensions appear
Those two values are read from the image itself and are always available, so seeing them alone means the file carries no EXIF block. PNG, GIF and BMP files commonly behave this way — GIF and BMP have no EXIF support at all.
My image format isn’t supported
JPG, JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and TIFF are read. HEIC and AVIF are recognised and their basic details shown, but their metadata sits in a container the viewer does not currently decode. Converting a HEIC photo to JPEG usually preserves the EXIF data and lets you read it in full.
The page shows an error or nothing happens
First check the file: very large files, damaged downloads and files with an image extension but non-image contents will all be rejected with a message. If the page seems to do nothing at all, confirm that JavaScript is enabled, since the tool runs entirely in your browser. If it still fails, send the format, file size and browser version through the form.
Are my images uploaded when I use the tool?
No. The viewer reads your file in the browser and parses it in memory, with no upload step and no third-party service involved. The tool keeps working with your connection switched off after the page has loaded, which is a simple way to verify it yourself.
What happens to the details I put in this form?
They are used to read and answer your message, and nothing else. Please keep sensitive information out of the message body. The Privacy Policy sets out how the site handles data.
Can you remove metadata from an image for me?
The tool reads metadata rather than editing or stripping it. On Windows you can right-click a file, open Properties, then Details, and choose “Remove Properties and Personal Information”; on macOS, location data can be removed through Photos.

Still stuck? Open the tool and note exactly what happens, then describe it in the form above.
